“Who suffered wounds for us, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.”

“Remembrance of the episcopal consecration of Fr. Karol Wojtyla on September 28, 1958, in the Metropolitan Basilica in Krakow on Wawel Hill.”

Nearly all priests have their own cards printed to commemorate ordination, the most important event of a priest’s life. In the case of Fr. Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II, his ordination was in secret due to  Communist rule in power at the time. So there is no such memorabilia of his ordination.

There are reasons that priests have ordination cards with general information on them. The first purpose, of course, is to commemorate the event. Also, priests give them as gifts in thank you cards, and also, they are given for people to remember that date.

Lots of times, on one side, there will be a holy picture, as there is of the crucified Christ on Fr. Wojtyla’s. Some priests choose a saint for whom the priest has a particular affection.

Oftentimes a favorite scripture quote is used, and the date and location of ordination is also included. Those references are also on this episcopal card of the future Saint Pope John Paul II.

This is an incredible holy card marking the occasion of his consecration as the auxiliary Bishop of Krakow (1958-1964) which paved the way to becoming Archbishop there in 1964 until being named Pope in 1978.
