This is a signed letter from Cardinal Terence Cooke to a Cuban Bishop, Carlos Riu Angles in 1966.

Cardinal Cooke was the auxiliary bishop in New York at the time of this letter. He was raised to the cardinalate by Pope Paul VI In April 1969. He was the second youngest member of the College of Cardinals.

Cardinal Cooke was considered to be theologically conservative but progressive in secular matters. His numerous programs to aid New York’s disadvantaged endeared him to the city. He participated in the conclaves which selected Popes John Paul I and John Paul II.

He died of cancer in 1983
