A matrice is a mold onto which an impression is embedded of a particular design. These images were used during the papacy of Alexander VIII for the production of papal medals.
The obverse side is an image of Pope Alexander VIII in profile.
The reverse side is an image of the pontiff seated with staff in hand, while the other hand appears to be raised in a blessing. The image is flanked by an adage surrounding the Pope and one beneath him.
