The inkwell is made of bronze and was commissioned by his family for the public exposition of the 50th anniversary of Pope Leo XIII as a priest.

It is in very good shape. The head of the lion opens to fill the body of the lion with ink and to dip a fountain pen into it. It is a lion because, of course, Leo is a lion.
