These coins commemorate the pastoral visit of John Paul II to Cuba. An image of John Paul II and the cathedral in Cuba is on one of the coins, and the image of John Paul II and Castro shaking hands is on the other coin.
The pesos have a date of 1997 as the commemoration of the Pope’s visit to Cuba. This may have been when they were issued. The actual dates of his visit were January 21-25, 1998.
